☆ Belton's Blog

Well, Harry Potter and Mysterious Britain has finally been
published, and I am extremely proud of the outcome. Not only
is it the first book I have published in Japanese aimed at normal
readers, as opposed to people studying English, it is also the
first book I have published together with my son, Jamie, who
drew the illustrations. All of the illustrations (49 in total) are
completely original and drawn specifically for the book, and
they all contain an aura that is typically British.

Jamie has been hard at work promoting the book, and so far has
made two radio appearances; one on Tokyo FM and one on
Yokohama FM (Hama-Raji!). 21 of the illustrations will also be
on display in the Junko-do bookstore in Ikebukuro in July, as I
mentioned above, and both Jamie and I are intending to visit
the exhibition a few times during the month.

From a father's point of view, it is extremely gratifying to have
worked on a book together with my son. Nothing can ever beat
the feeling one gets when one's first book is published, but this
book (even though it is about my fiftieth book published in various
countries of the world) comes very close.

Last Tuesday was my wife's ○○th birthday, and the entire
family went out for a meal in a Mediterranean restaurant. We
spent a couple of hours over excellent food and drinks, and a
good time was had by all. The new photograph I mentioned in
[What's New?] that is now in my homepage profile was taken
by the waitress at the end of the meal. If you'd like to know
the composition of the family, it is (from left to right)

☆ Fight like cat and dog: 猛烈にやり合う､激しく口論する

- If I leave my children unattended for even a moment, they end up fighting
　like cat and dog.
　子どもたちから一瞬でも目を離すと､たちまち大げんかになる｡

- Their marriage started off without trouble, but within a year they were
　fighting like cat and dog.
　ふたりは難なく結婚生活を始めたが､1年もたたないうちに激しくいがみあう
　ようになった
	
☆ Put the cat amongst the pigeons: 騒ぎのもとをつくる

- She certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons when she canceled her wedding.
　彼女が結婚式をｷｬﾝｾﾙしたので､ひどく厄介なことになった｡

- The prime minister put the cat amongst the pigeons when he suggested the
　constitution should be amended.
　首相は憲法改正を提案し､大混乱を巻き起こした｡
	
☆ Go to the dogs: 駄目になる､落ちぶれる

- This restaurant has gone to the dogs since the new owner took over. 
　このﾚｽﾄﾗﾝは新しいｵｰﾅｰになってからだめになった｡

- Education levels are going to the dogs since the new curriculum was instated.
　新しいｶﾘｷｭﾗﾑが導入されて以来､教育ﾚﾍﾞﾙが大幅に下がっている｡
	
☆ Hair of the dog: 向かい酒

- You look terrible. Can I interest you in the hair of the dog?
　ひどく具合が悪そうだね｡迎え酒でもどう？

- I drank too much last night and desperately need the hair of the dog.
　昨晩は飲みすぎたので､酒を飲んで酔いをさますしかない｡
	
☆ As poor as a church mouse: 非常に貧しい

- By the time this vacation finishes, I’ll be as poor as a church mouse.
　この休暇が終わるまでに､私はひどく貧乏になっているだろう｡

- Don’t ask him to lend you any money. He’s as poor as a church mouse.

☆ Smell a rat: うさんくさい､怪しいと感じる

- I began to smell a rat when I noticed that the terminology in the contract

☆ Donkey's years: 非常に長い間

- I think I'll telephone Bill. I haven't heard from him in donkey's years.
　ﾋﾞﾙに電話してみようと思う｡長いこと彼から連絡を受けていない｡

- George worked for the company for donkey's years, and all they gave him
　when he retired was a gold pen.
　ｼﾞｮｰｼﾞは長年その会社で働いたが､退職するときに会社がくれたのは金の
　ﾍﾟﾝだけだった｡

☆ Pig-headed: 頑固な､偏屈な

- He is so pig-headed sometimes that I could hit him.
　彼はときどきあまりに頑固なので､殴りたくなるほどだ

- She can be very pig-headed when it comes to designer clothes.
　彼女はﾌﾞﾗﾝﾄﾞ物の服のこととなると､自分の意見に頑としてこだわる｡
	
☆ Fish out of water: 場違いの人

- He looks life a fish out of water in that tuxedo.
　ﾀｷｼｰﾄﾞを着た彼はまるで落ち着かないようすだ｡

- I’d like to help you, but I’m like a fish out of water when it comes to computers.
　手伝ってあげたいのですが､私はｺﾝﾋﾟｭｰﾀとなるとまったくの門外漢でして｡

★ 英語の迷信−Part I

　このｼﾘｰｽﾞは会話には役立たないかもしれませんが､海外で､または映画の
中などで見かける奇妙な風習の謎を解くのに役立つでしょう｡ほとんどの人は
自分が迷信深いとは思っていないでしょうが､縁起をかつぎ､日常生活の中で
小さなしきたりを守っている人は意外と多いものです｡たとえば日本の場合なら､
霊柩車が通りすぎるときに親指を隠すのもそのひとつ｡しかしなぜそうするかと
言われれば､両親がやっていたことにならっているだけで､自分ではとくに迷信
と思っていない場合が多いようです｡
　ここでは､12週間をわたって英語圏の人々に今なお影響を与え続けていると
思われる迷信の数々をあげてみました｡もちろん地域差はありますが､この多く
はほとんどの地域で今もよく見られるものです｡こぼしてしまった塩をひとつまみ
肩越しに投げる人､梯子の下を避けて歩く人､鏡を割ってしまってｼｮｯｸを受け
ている人――もしもこんな場面を映画で見かけたなら､その理由を知らずには
いられなくなることでしょう｡

☆ acorns　どんぐり

- An acorn carried on the person brings luck and ensures a long life.
　どんぐりを身につけていると幸運が訪れ､長生きできる｡

- An acorn placed by a window will keep lightning out.
　窓辺にどんぐりを置くと雷除けになる｡

☆ ambulances　救急車

- Seeing an ambulance is very unlucky unless you pinch your nose or hold
　your breath until you see a black or a brown dog.
　救急車を見かけると縁起が悪い｡ただし､黒か茶色の犬を見かけるまで鼻
　をつまんで息を止めていれば､災いを避けられる｡

☆ apples　りんご

- Recite the names of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry
　repeatedly while twisting the stem of an apple. You will marry the person
　whose name you were saying when the stem comes off.
　りんごの茎をひねりながら､結婚相手になるかもしれない5､6人の名前を
　繰り返し唱える｡茎が取れたときに唱えていた名前が､あなたの結婚相手｡

- Eating one apple every day will prevent visits to the doctor.
　毎日りんごをひとつ食べれば､医者にかからずにすむ｡

- If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will
　know how many children you will have.
　りんごを半分に切って種の数を数えれば､将来授かる子どもの数がわかる｡

☆ baseball bats　野球のﾊﾞｯﾄ

- Spit on a new baseball bat before using it for the first time to make it lucky.
　初めて使う新品の野球ﾊﾞｯﾄにつばを吐けば､つきがまわってくる｡

☆ beds　ﾍﾞｯﾄﾞ

- It is bad luck to put a hat on a bed.
　ﾍﾞｯﾄﾞの上に帽子を置くのは縁起が悪い｡

- If you make a bedspread, or a quilt, be sure to finish it or marriage will
　never come to you.
　ﾍﾞｯﾄﾞｶﾊﾞｰを作るときは最後まで仕上げること｡途中でやめると結婚でき
　なくなる｡

- Placing a bed facing north and south brings misfortune.
　南北の向きにﾍﾞｯﾄﾞを置くのは縁起が悪い｡

- You must get out of bed on the same side that you get in or you will have
　bad luck.
　ﾍﾞｯﾄﾞから出るときはﾍﾞｯﾄﾞに入るときと同じ側から｡さもないと不運に見舞われる｡

- When making the bed, don't interrupt your work, or you will spend a restless
　night in it.
　ﾍﾞｯﾄﾞﾒｲｷﾝｸﾞをするときは途中でやめないように｡中断すると眠れない夜を
　過ごすことになる｡

                       ----- The Land of Words: Part XI -----


	A small man with a large, round stomach stood behind the 
counter. He had a big grin on his face, and seemed delighted to see his 
visitor. 'Ah, Tsubasa!' he exclaimed, 'I'm so glad you got here. I was asked 
to hand this to you.' He leaned under the counter and brought out a flat 
object covered in the same red cloth that had held the first items.
	'Do we get a clue, as well?' asked Tsubasa.
	'Ten,' replied the small baker.
       Tsubasa thanked him and ran out of the shop. He tore the cloth off 
the package to reveal another piece of wood similar to the first one. He 
held it up quickly and shouted, 'Sayaka! Take a print-out quickly. We 
don't have much time left. The clue is "ten," so we need ten words.'

	Sayaka quickly printed out the sheet and ran across to the table, 
where her mother and grandmother were waiting with the pen and 
notebook. They worked as swiftly as they could, and one by one, they 
wrote down the words that they found. After five minutes, Sayaka 
shouted, 'Tsubasa, we've got it! Listen carefully now. The message is; Go 
to the west and deliver the key to Drodore. Have you got that?'
	'To the west? Okay. How much time do we have?'
	Tsubasa's mother glanced over at the computer screen and said, 
'Nine minutes left, Tsubasa. Hurry now!'
	Tsubasa checked the compass and pointed over to the edge of the 
forest. 'That way, dad. Drodore is in that direction.'
	'Then we'd better hurry up,' said his father.
