Well, the hot summer finally appears to have started, and I
must admit, I am rather glad. I have become so used to the
hotness and high humidity of the Japanese summer, that I
look forward to it very much. Of course, too much of a good
thing gets boring after a while, and by the end of August I
usually can't wait for the cooler weather to return, but I
particularly enjoy this time of year when the summer is first
starting.
My dog, Coral, on the other hand, isn't too keen on summer,
unfortunately. I guess it is because she is closer to the ground,
which gets very hot, but taking her for a walk in summer takes
longer because she hides under bushes and in shadows so she
can avoid the direct sunshine.
Actually, my wife is exactly the same...:-)

I visited the megastore IKEA last week for the first time.
It's huge...!!! I went with my son, Jamie, to get some stuff,
and it took us nearly an hour to find what we wanted. We
then got lost trying to find the way back to the car, so in
the end we were inside the store for about ninety minutes.
But, it is just the sort of store that my wife absolutely
loves, and she would probably spend an entire day just
wandering around the place in delight. So, as we returned
to the car, we both made a vow.
Never, ever would be accompany my wife to this store...:-)

☆ ﾜﾝ･ﾎﾟｲﾝﾄ英語 ＜文中の数の書き方＞
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
★ 文中の数の書き方
文のなかに数が出てくるとき､ｱﾙﾌｧﾍﾞｯﾄで綴るのではなく､すべて
数字を使って表す人は多く､これが容認される場合もありますが､文字で
綴ることが要求される場合もあります｡文中での数の書き方には次のような
約束事があります｡
- ｱﾙﾌｧﾍﾞｯﾄで数を書く
この場合のﾙｰﾙには2つの流派があります｡
1） 1から9までの数はすべてｱﾙﾌｧﾍﾞｯﾄで綴り､10以上の数は数字で
表します｡
- There are 15 students in my class.
わたしのｸﾗｽには生徒が15人います
- There are eight boys in my class.
わたしのｸﾗｽには男の子が8人います
- I have a total of 72 DVDs in my collection.
わたしはｺﾚｸｼｮﾝとして､全部で72枚のDVDを持っています
- I bought three DVDs yesterday.
わたしはきのうDVDを3枚買いました
2） 1から99までの数はすべてｱﾙﾌｧﾍﾞｯﾄで綴り､100以上の数は数字で
表します｡
- The computer has more than 120 databases.
そのｺﾝﾋﾟｭｰﾀには120以上のﾃﾞｰﾀﾍﾞｰｽが入っている
- I only use about fifty databases in my work.
わたしは仕事で50のﾃﾞｰﾀﾍﾞｰｽしか使わない
- His bookcases contain nearly 800 books.
彼の本棚には800冊近くの本が収められている
- He has only read eighty of his book collection.
彼は持っている本のうち80冊しか読んでいない
どちらの流派を選んでもかまいませんが､わたしの個人的な意見では､
2のほうがすっきりとして､ﾌﾟﾛらしく見えると思います｡もちろん､伝言や
Eﾒｰﾙを書くときは､べつにﾌﾟﾛらしく見える必要はありませんが｡
もしも文中に数がふたつ以上あり､そのうちのひとつに数字を使う必要
があれば､すべての数を数字で書きます｡
- わたしのｸﾗｽには生徒が15人いて､そのうちの8人は男の子です｡
○ There are 15 students in my class and 8 of them are boys.
× There are 15 students in my class and eight of them are boys.
- わたしはきのうDVDを3枚買い､これでわたしのｺﾚｸｼｮﾝは72枚に
なりました｡
○ I bought 3 DVDs yesterday, which brings my collection to 72.
× I bought three DVDs yesterday, which brings my collection to 72.
上記のﾙｰﾙにかかわらず､文頭に数が来るときは､どんな数でも
ｱﾙﾌｧﾍﾞｯﾄで綴らなければなりません｡
- 28人がｾﾐﾅｰへの参加を申し込んだ｡
○ Twenty-eight people have applied for the seminar.
× 28 people have applied for the seminar.
- このｵﾌｨｽでは142名の従業員が働いている｡
○ One hundred and forty-two employees work in this office.
× 142 employees work in this office.

★ 英語の迷信－Part III
☆ brooms ほうき
- Do not lean a broom against a bed, because the evil spirits in
the broom will cast a spell on it.
ほうきをﾍﾞｯﾄﾞに立てかけてはならない｡ほうきの中の悪霊がﾍﾞｯﾄﾞ
に呪いをかけるから｡
- If you sweep trash out the door after dark, it will bring a stranger
to visit.
暗くなってからｺﾞﾐを戸口の外に掃き出すと､見知らぬ人が訪ねてくる｡
- If someone is sweeping the floor and sweeps over your feet, you'll
never get married.
足元をほうきで掃かれると結婚できなくなる｡
- Never take a broom along when you move house. Throw it out and
buy a new one.
引越しのときにほうきを持っていってはならない｡捨てて新しいのを買う
こと｡
- To prevent an unwelcome guest from returning, sweep out the room
they stayed in immediately after they leave.
いやな客が二度と訪ねてこないよう､その客が帰ったあとはすぐに部屋
のほこりを掃き出すこと｡
☆ butterflies 蝶
- If the first butterfly you see in the year is white, you will have good
luck all year.
その年最初に見た蝶が白い蝶なら､幸運な年になる｡
- Three butterflies together mean good luck.
蝶が3羽いるのを見かけたら幸運の印｡
☆ candles ろうそく
- If a candle lighted as part of a ceremony blows out, it is a sign that
evil spirits are nearby.
儀式のあいだに灯したろうそくの火が消えたら､悪霊が近くにいる印｡
- If you blow out all the candles on your birthday cake with the first
puff you will get your wish.
誕生日のｹｰｷのろうそくを一度ですべて吹き消すことができたら､
望みがかなう｡
☆ calves 子牛
- If the first calf born during the winter is white, the winter will be
a bad one.
冬に生まれた最初の子牛が白い子牛ならば､その冬は不運に
見舞われる｡
☆ cats 猫
- If a black cat walks towards you, it brings good fortune, but if it walks
away, it takes the good luck with it.
黒猫がこちらにやってきたら幸運が訪れる｡だが歩き去ったら幸運も
去ってしまう｡
- Keep cats away from babies because they "suck the breath" of the
child.
猫を赤ん坊に近づけないように｡赤ん坊の｢息を吸い取って｣しまう
から｡
- A cat onboard a ship will bring good luck.
船に乗せられた猫は幸運をもたらす｡

----- The Land of Words: Part XIII -----
A large rock stood on the other side of the door. The face of the
rock was carefully carved with the following words:
You have chosen the correct door. Well done!
Your final task is to open the three chests behind this rock.
Each chest is protected by a password that must be spoken aloud.
Clues to the password are written on each chest.
Gather the gold that is contained within the chests, and place it
on the scales.
From there, your homeward journey is close.
Tsubasa and his father quickly read the words written on the rock,
and then walked around behind it. The forest they had just left seemed to
continue on this side of the door as well, but placed in front of a huge oak
tree were three wooden chests. The chests looked very old, and the top of
each was carved with English words. Behind the chests was a large and
very ornate set of weighing scales. The pivot consisted of a very beautiful
woman holding two brass dishes in her outstretched hands. The left-hand
dish was dipped lower than the right-hand, although nothing seemed to
be on it.
'Tsubasa,' came his mother's worried voice. 'I wish you hadn't
started this silly game. Another clock has appeared on the screen. This
time with only ten minutes. You'd better move swiftly.'
'Not again!' exclaimed his father, slapping a hand against his
forehead. 'This is getting ridiculous! Let's hope this really is the final
task.'
They walked forward until they were standing in front of the first
chest. Tsubasa examined it closely, but it didn't seem to have a lid or any
hinges. Looking confused, he read the words, and called out to his family
back in their living room. 'It's a riddle. Can you see it?'
'Yes, Tsubasa,' said Sayaka. 'We can see it.'
'The chest doesn't have a lid. How are we supposed to open it?'
'Like the instructions said, you have to say the password out loud
to open it. It's protected.'
'So, what do we do?'
'We have to solve the riddle. It will open when you say the
password'
